We noticed the crowd in front of the Walnut Ave Cafe; hoards of patrons wait patiently outside this lovely eatery, located right in the heart of Santa Cruz. Each customer waiting for their opportunity to eat some of the best omelettes around. So, we followed suit and decided to join the crowds. Okay, so we are not individuals but we were also not disappointed.
I didn’t try an omelette, but I did try the Juevos Rancheros con Carnitas. It’s a hoard of black beans thrown atop two warm tortilla shells, covered with an sunnyside-up egg, cheese, salsa, and carnitas. It’s so delicious.
The Kid had his favorite, a waffle. It was fluffy, crispy and absorbed the syrup just right.
Walnut Ave Cafe is known for its breakfast menu, but they have an impressive array of burgers. Our group tried the California burger, a mouth-watering patty topped with avocado, and the Santa Fe burger, another mouth-watering patty topped with a zesty, southwestern-inspired sauce on sourdough. And if you go for a burger, you must order the home fries. They are not fries at all, but instead chunks of well-cooked, well-seasoned potatoes.
In addition to happily, fed people, the animals are also treated well at the Walnut Ave Cafe. Yes, dogs are allowed to dine in the front patio and there are special menu items just for your furry friends.
So far, Walnut Cafe is my favorite breakfast spot in Santa Cruz. I know I said Zachary’s was and I still like them, but Walnut Cafe has them beat.
