Some consider a great steak the mark of a great restaurant, but I beg to differ. A great breakfast is the hallmark of a stellar chef. And Zachary’s in Santa Cruz has been dishing out great breakfasts to locals for years.
Breakfast is one meal which people don’t often take seriously. Eggs and pancakes just don’t seem like a big deal, so finding a place that can kick out great versions of this important meal is difficult. After reading some great reviews, I headed over to Zachary’s, located in downtown Santa Cruz to try some of their most infamous dishes– sour cream pancakes with chicken-apple sausage, and artichoke heart frittata.
Honestly, the pancakes were great but not especially impressive. They tasted like ordinary pancakes, there was nothing sour-creamy about them. I wouldn’t return to Zachary’s for the sour-cream pancakes. The chicken-apple sausage was great. My husband’s artichoke heart frittata with fried potatoes was delish! I’m not a great fan of frittatas, to me they just seem like over-cooked eggs, but Zachary’s did a great job.
My son had the Mickey Mouse pancakes. The pancakes were shaped like a mouse, but Mickey was nowhere to be found. My son also wasn’t too crazy about the fruit Zachary’s places atop of the pancakes to make mouse eyes, nose, and smile, but my son is weird– most kids would love it. In addition, we also ordered up some tangerine juice, which is delectable.
Zachary’s Restaurant menu is also includes dishes such as:
Corned Beef Hash
Italian Sausage, Mozzarella and Tomato Scramble
Ribeye and Eggs
The vibe in Zachary’s is typical Santa Cruz swank. It’s a cozy, laid-back environment, but not fancy. The restaurant was very crowded, but we didn’t have to wait more than 5 minutes for a table. Customer service is stellar, and are food was served quite quickly.
I give Zachary’s 4.2 out of 5 for serving up one of the best breakfast selections in Santa Cruz.
