Kids love camping no matter where it is, but i’ve found a few California campgrounds to be more kid-friendly than others. Our family loves campgrounds that offer more to do than just sitting by a fire. So here are a few that you might want to check out with your kids.
Camping with Kids in the Pinnacles
The Pinnacles is the newest state park, so not many people have been there. It is also located about 30 miles south of Hollister, so it can get pretty hot during the Summer days. To beat the heat, visit the Pinnacles during the mid-Fall or late-Spring to catch the weather at its most temperate.
Kids will love a visit to the Pinnacles because of its wondrous cave systems. My son had a blast taking the short-hike up to Bear Gulch Cave. The cave is damp and dark with a small creek running through it filled with frogs and other creatures. It takes about 20-30 minutes to get through the caves. It truly feels like an adventure. After you crawl your way out of the cave (and you will have to crawl), you head up to the waterfall and reservoir which looks like an oasis in the desert.
After the hike, the whole family can enjoy a dip in the pool located just shy of the campground. If you go during the summer months, you will be absolutely grateful for this wet hole in the ground.
Campland on the Bay is Perfect for Kids
The Campland on the Bay is located in San Diego. It is not a state or national park, and neither rustic or woodsy. It is instead a contrived but fun campground near a host of kid-friendly attractions like the San Diego Zoo and SeaWorld. For this reason, it is a very affordable option for vacationing families. Kids will love all of the activities available at this campground. Swimming, sailing, jet-skiing, aqua-cycling, bike rentals, skateboarding at their skate park, video gaming, and even sand castle competitions are just a few things that will keep the kids occupied.
The Campland on the Bay also has plenty of eateries nearby if hot dogs over an open fire don’t fit your kids taste.

Camping with Kids at Leo Carrillo
LeoCarrillo State Park is located in Malibu. Campers have access to two sandy beaches for daytime play. And the kids will love playing in tide pools the coves and exploring the nearby sea caves. The campground is well-shaded and near the water, so the outdoor temperature stays mild and is perfect for summer camping.

Picking the perfect campground is just one of many things to think about. Other things of note include food, camping games, and accessories to make the environment as livable and entertaining as possible. Some of us camping mommies have even created great camping hacks that make camping with small kids even easier.
